One word, held
Yesterday you read the word. Today, do not think about it — try to be inside it. Abide. Not as an idea to understand, but as a place to stand still in. Say it slowly, the way you'd say the name of a room you're already in: not asking whether you're there, just noticing that you are.
There is no technique for this. That is the whole point of the word. You cannot abide harder. You can only stop leaving.
The sap moves at night
A vine does not stop working when the light goes out. All night, unseen, unmeasured, the sap keeps moving from root to trunk to branch — no branch straining to pull it, no root deciding to send more. It simply moves, because the plant is one living thing and life does not need to be summoned from one part to another.
This is the picture underneath the command. Whatever is happening in you right now — tired, distracted, unsure if you're doing this right — the sap is still moving. Fruit is not made by your attention to the process. It is made by staying attached long enough for the process to keep happening without you watching it.
A prayer
Jesus, I don't need to feel the sap moving to trust that it is. Keep me attached tonight, in the dark, without proof. Amen.
